22 of the best design hacks that no one talks about that will make your home gorgeous
Who doesn’t love a good design hack. I know I do.
That’s why I compiled some of my favorites for you.
(If you want to see more of my design hacks, my cleaning hacks and my 6 step formula to to turn your house into your home check out my new guide I just created)
I’ve been decorating our home for years. Over the years, I have learned that it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. If you think outside of the box and only decorate with what you love, you are well on your way to a well styled home.
Let’s just get right to it, shall we?
My Favorite Interior Design Hacks
~Want to make your room look bigger? Move your furniture a few inches from the wall.
Just try it, I dare you.
I have more tips to make your small room look bigger in this post
~Next time you are at TJ Maxx or Homegoods, take a look at the clearance section. Regardless of what the pillow looks like, if it has a feather insert, grab it. I get all of my feather pillow inserts on clearance.
~Another great thing to look for at Homegoods is long tablecloths. Tablecloths make great drapes. Just use ring clips to hang them
~If you really want to elevate your curtains, you can add pleating tape to your curtains (or tablecloth) and hang your curtains with a pinch pleat
(You can see how I pinch pleat my curtains in this post)
~Make sure to hang those curtains high and wide.
~If you love the look of sconces but can’t hardwire them, attach the sconce to your wall and use a rechargeable light bulb.
~Lampshades and lamp bases do not have to stay married to each other. Move your lampshades around to give a new look to your table and floor lamps
This floor lamp and this shade were never married. I stole this floor lamp from my parents and just plopped this random lamp shade I had. Voila!
~Shop at thrift stores often. You never know what you will find.
I used an old dining table as our coffee table. I just cut the legs down and voila, I had a fun new coffee table.
~You do NOT have to buy your furniture as sets.
Some of the most well designed homes do NOT have matching sets of furniture….just saying
~If your family room is big enough, you can use 2 sofas instead of 1 sofa and 1 loveseat. And guess what, your sofas do not have to match (gasp)
~Love the look of shiplap but not the work to install it? You can mimic the look of shiplap by drawing lines on your walls with a pencil (not a sharpie-I learned that the hard way) Tutorial linked here
~Love the look of beadboard but also not the work? Use beadboard wallpaper instead.
~Use toothpaste to help you hang pictures on your wall. Put a dab on the back of your frame where the hook is and press it up against the wall where you want your art to go. The toothpaste will transfer to the wall so you know where to hammer in your nail
~Love the look of a piece of art but not the glare of the glass? Remove the glass. (Only to do this on inexpensive pieces of art).
~Use cheap pillow covers and nice quality feather inserts (that you bought on clearance at Homegoods). You’ll get the look of designer pillows for a fraction of the price
~Drape a nice blanket over the back of your sofa (to hide the back of your sofa)
~Switch out all of your outdated outlet covers. You can find nice inexpensive ones on Amazon.
~Same goes for your kitchen cabinet hardware and doorknobs if they need replaced
~Don’t be afraid to paint your INTERIOR doors (and it doesn’t have to be black)
~Don’t be afraid to use faux flowers and plants in your decor. Some of us people with black thumbs just need to go faux. There are some really nice fake flowers and plants out there now
~Always get a bigger rug than what you think you need. Nothing kills the design of any room than having the wrong size rug.
Don’t be afraid to layer a smaller patterned rug over a larger inexpensive jute rug.
~Your kitchen counters CAN be stylish and functional

~My biggest tip
It’s your home…decorate it however you want. No one will come and yell at you or send you off to decorating school. Have fun and just love your home how you want to.
