What is Grandmillennial Style

Discover the charm of granny chic home decor with our guide. Learn how to blend vintage elegance with modern flair, incorporating traditional patterns, antique furniture, cozy textiles, and whimsical accents to create a space that’s both nostalgic and inviting.

Ah, grandmillennial style—the charming, slightly eccentric cousin of traditional interior design that has slowly been making waves in some of our otherwise minimalist homes.

My home has never classified as a minimalist. Just ask my husband.

I like stuff and lots of it.

I know this style isn’t for everyone.

Grandmillennial style is like a nostalgic hug from grandma’s house, but with a trendy twist. I’m talking ruffles, patterns on patterns, and a hearty dose of vintage, all living in stylish harmony.

Imagine entering an elegant antique shop with a hint of modern —that’s the grandmillennial vibe in a nutshell.

This isn’t your standard throwback style; it’s a deliberate throw-forward that combines the comfort and warmth of the past with the freshness of modern living.

Years ago the farmhouse trend was all the rage and I jumped on that trend hard. Lately, I have been harboring a secret love for the ornate and the cozy.

And if you have been spending anytime on IG you might be noticing a shift in the world of home decor.

Here we are now, in the grandmillennial realm, where vintage floral wallpaper and plush velvets are making it’s way back into our homes.

Grandmillennial style lets us break free from the ‘less is more’ mantra. Sometimes more is just, well, more fun and I am 100% on board with this style.

We are in our clutter era and it gives us (me) more reason to shop!

It’s time dust off that china cabinet and fluff those throw pillows—grandma is here to decorate our homes.

How To Achieve the Grandmillennial Style in Your Home

Grandmillennial style, often abbreviated as “granny chic,” is a design trend that blends traditional and vintage elements with modern flair. It’s characterized by a mix of old-world charm, eclectic patterns, antique furniture, and cozy textiles.

Here’s how you can achieve the grandmillennial look in your home:

Embrace Traditional Patterns:

Incorporate classic patterns such as chintz, toile, florals, and plaids into your upholstery, curtains, and throw pillows. These patterns add a nostalgic touch to your space.

Bold patterns? Yes, please. Pair them with stripes, plaids, and, oh, some more florals

Mix Old and New:

Combine antique or vintage furniture pieces with contemporary elements to create contrast and visual interest. For example, pair a Victorian-style sofa with sleek, modern side tables.

You can also mix a sleek, modern sofa with an antique wood coffee or end table.

It’s that juxtaposition of old and new that gives our rooms a curated look.

Layer Textiles:

Behold the mighty rattan—I have always loved rattan in my home decor.  Rattan pieces give that airy feel with the right amount of vintage vibes.

Use a variety of textiles such as velvet, lace, needlepoint, and crochet to add texture and warmth to your space. Layering different fabrics creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Display Collectibles:

Say goodbye to your bare surfaces.

Showcase your collections of china, porcelain figurines, vintage books, or antique trinkets on shelves or mantels. These personal touches add character and tell a story about your interests and travels.

Some may say this is clutter, but I like to call it personality.

Opt for Timeless Furniture:

Choose furniture pieces with classic silhouettes and craftsmanship. Look for pieces with turned legs, carved details, or upholstered in traditional fabrics like damask or brocade.

We’ve all seen brown wood furniture that seemed to fade into the background, right? But not anymore, we are embracing mahogany furniture again

Incorporate Fringe, Tassels and Ruffles

Add decorative trims such as fringe, tassels, or pom-poms to curtains, lampshades, and throw blankets for a whimsical touch.

I cannot get enough of ruffles right now, throw them on a pillow and I’m done.

Use Vintage Accents:

This is my weakness. I cannot get enough of vintage accessories.

Incorporate vintage accents like brass candlesticks, crystal vases, ornate mirrors, and heirloom rugs to infuse your space with old-world charm.

Add pattern:

Floral patterns are quintessentially grandmillennial. Whether it’s wallpaper, upholstery, or bedding, don’t shy away from bold floral prints to add a pop of color and femininity to your space.

Gingham is having it’s time to shine right now. From pillows to tablecloths, gingham is perfect to add some granny chic to your home

Add Whimsical Touches:

Incorporate playful elements such as quirky artwork, whimsical sculptures, or vintage-inspired wallpaper to inject personality and charm into your space.

Install Traditional Wall Molding:

Molding has been a classic in design since grandma was alive.

Molding is a great way to elevate your space and add dimension to your room. Box molding is as traditional as they come and can be an easy DIY project

Add Antique Lighting:

Incorporate vintage-inspired lighting fixtures such as chandeliers, sconces, or table lamps to add a touch of elegance and nostalgia to your space.

Remember, the key to achieving grandmillennial style is to blend old-world charm with modern sensibilities in a way that feels curated and personal to you. Have fun experimenting with different elements and creating a space that reflects your unique style and personality.
