Budget Living Room Makeover (Living Room Ideas With a Gray Couch)
(Updating your living room doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Just a few small changes can make a big impact)
It’s Friday! It’s Friday!
Well, I guess technically I have no idea when you are reading this post so just pretend it’s Friday.
A few years ago I asked some of my email followers what they wanted more of from me. Now, keep in mind, I never send out newsletters so I had plenty of room to grow.
I (surprisingly) had a good handful of responses back asking for daily deals (home decor related obviously). So….as the good blogger that I am, I never sent out another newsletter since then. I did the complete opposite. Ha!
Let me tell you something though, blogging is hard..sometimes overwhelming hard. But what I love the most is finding deals and sharing them.
I can’t keep blogging without getting back to what I love. So here I am, making good on my promise from two years ago.
I know I have shared many living room/family room blog posts before and I will link them again below. If there is ever a room always getting updated in our home, it is our family room.
Technically we have two family rooms. One room gets used daily, the other room rarely gets used but somehow still gets destroyed by the kids. It’s amazing how they do that.
Both rooms needed some updates and I was itching to make some changes which brings us to this edition of Friday Finds.
But first, let me start off with saying that even the smallest change can make a huge difference. If you are itching for a change in your home, you do not need to buy a bunch of new things. Even just moving some furniture around can make a huge difference.
Sometimes you just need to get creative. I got creative…and then I bought some new things.
Let’s talk about the easiest bang for my buck in my family room….

New Curtains
Many years ago, I made no sew roman shades for this room and while I loved them, I knew they weren’t permanent. I knew at some point I wanted to add curtains to this room.
Curtains are the easiest way to make any room feel elevated and cozy. I wrote a long post on where to find affordable curtains if you need some more ideas. But for this post, the stars of the show are my IKEA Hannalill curtains and the infamous Target curtains.
If you know me, you know I love IKEA. But much like Target, I cannot walk into an IKEA and come out with just what I wanted. I took one for the team (and for my credit card) and purchased the Hannalill curtains online and had them shipped to me. It cost me $5 for shipping and it likely saved me $500
I love IKEA curtains for so many reasons…the price is great, they are longer in length and they are so easy to hang with the back tab. The majority of my curtains are from IKEA.
I also found a 240″ long curtain rod to hang them on. Visually I just wanted one long rod going across my wall.
On the topic of visual….hang those curtains high and wide. I cannot stress that enough. This is the easiest way to make your room feel larger.
I did hang different curtains in my kitchen. The IKEA ones felt flat to me in the kitchen so I purchased the infamous Target curtains and they are great.
They are black out curtains so they are thicker. If you have thick and heavy curtains that are not laying right for you, then you need to “train” them.
It does work, I promise. And I joke these curtains are the only things in my house that actually listen to me.
Now let’s see the difference curtains can make in a space…
Before with just my roman shades
After with new curtains
See what I am talking about?? I feel like I completely changed my room for under $100
I also cannot forget to mention the new (and also infamous) bamboo shades I finally installed. These are not black out shades by any means but they do filter the sunlight coming in.
New Area Rugs
I did break down and purchase two new area rugs. I have three kids and a large dog. I know to never spend tons of money on area rugs. I also know that after many years with said kids and large dog, my area rugs will need to be replaced.
This was the month to replace them.
And once again, I was searching for a good price.
I grabbed this rug for the family room that rarely gets used.
I really do love this rug but I do feel like it’s pretty popular and I see it everywhere. This isn’t a bad thing but when it came time for me to look for a rug for the other family room, I wanted something different. I also wanted something unexpected (for me).
(I really wanted this rug but if there was ever a very popular rug, it is this one.)
After much searching I found THE rug. It was affordable, different, and completely out of my comfort zone.
And I love it
It has every color under the sun it in. It looks different from every angle (keep that in mind if you purchase it) and it is dog approved.
A few new other favorites I picked up for our family room.
I also love this faux maple tree. It’s on my wish list!
