Paint Colors That Will Never Go Out Of Style. Timeless Paint Colors That Will Look Good In Any Room In Your Home
[mailerlite_form form_id=8]
I can’t tell you how many mistakes I have made picking paint colors. You know it’s bad when the painters leave and you immediately hate the paint color you picked….on your 25 foot high walls. And then you have to live with your taupey walls with an orange undertone for 10 years…or until you move.
Sometimes I wonder if I agreed to move to just start fresh with my walls.
So when we moved into our current home I told myself I wasn’t going to make another paint mistake. I was going to research and analyze every paint color. The days of standing in front of thousands of paint swatches and doing eeny meeny miney moe are over.
If I only I knew then what I know now, I would have picked a timeless paint color. A color that will look good 20 years from now, a color that is not a trend or “color of the year”.
I am not saying to never paint a room a trendy color or the next “color of the year” if you like it. But if you are looking for a timeless paint color, this post is for you.
**Disclaimer…I am not a professional interior designer. I like to refer to myself as a crazy interior decorator. Just because I am telling you that some of these colors are great paint choices, make sure to still do your homework. Look at their undertones, bring home samples and make sure the colors look good with your decor and floors. Keep reading and I will give you some tips on how to pick the best paint color***
Color Palettes That Will Never Go Out of Style
Whites, Neutrals and Cool Paint Colors
I know that picking a white color for your walls might seem trendy, but it’s not. You can never go wrong picking a white or a neutral for your walls. When you go neutral on your walls, you can add in color to your room with the accessories. It makes it so much easier to change up your decor when the walls are neutral.
Silver Drop by Behr
My favorite paint color, since it’s painted on every wall in my house, is Silver Drop by Behr. And it is listed as one of Behr’s timeless paint colors. Did you know they had that section of paint swatches in the store? It’s fun to see what they picked as timeless. I was glad to see Silver Drop as one.
This color reads differently in each room of my house, which I love. It’s a very subtle blue gray color that will go with everything…even my red Brazilian cherry wood floors.
Dover White (Sherwin Williams)
A very popular white color for trim, cabinetry and walls is Dover White. I know there are hundreds of whites to choose from. Dover White is a warm white and is pretty popular with designers. I used it in my hallway on my grid wall only.
You can see how subtle of a difference there is between Dover White and Silver Drop.
Extra White (Sherwin Williams)
Extra White is well, extra white. It’s a crisp white and also very popular choice for trim. Painting your walls and trim extra white might be too stark. However, I have seen colored trim with white walls. While I love this look, please proceed with caution. Painting your trim is no easy task and if you think it’s something you might regret in 10 years, don’t do it.
For reference, my walls are Silver Drop and my trim is Extra White.
Alabaster (Sherwin Williams)
Alabaster was Sherwin Williams color of the year in 2016. It’s a very subtle white, if that makes sense. It’s not too start and not too creamy. It’s such a pretty color and can be used for walls, trim and cabinetry.
Cloud Cover (Benjamin Moore)
This is one of those perfect white colors. Not too white, not too creamy, not too cool, not too warm. It’s a good white if you are afraid to go all white on your walls. It’s more of a traditional white and becoming a favorite paint color among designers.

Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray
If you have ever searched popular paint colors on Pinterest, I am almost certain that Revere Pewter was among one of the top choices. And while it is a beautiful paint color, it’s lighter cousin Edgecomb Gray might be worth looking into. It’s a warm greige color. Not too gray, not too beige and doesn’t have any sneaky undertones that some greige paint colors can have. I definitely would recommend this color to anyone that is afraid to go white or straight gray on their walls.
Classic Gray (Benjamin Moore)
I mean, this paint color has the word “classic” in it. How can I not mention it?? This is a perfect color for any room. While you might think it is a gray color, it has a slightly beige undertone. It can look either gray (ish) or slightly greige (ish) depending on the room.

Wedgewood Gray (Benjamin Moore)
This color is not far from being one of my favorite paint colors. It looks beautiful on walls, furniture and cabinetry. I used this color in my dining room and on my kitchen cabinets in our old house. This is definitely one of those “I’m going to look different in every room” paint colors. It can read blue, gray and green depending on the lighting. This is where I would highly suggest that you paint a sample in each room you want to use this paint color in. I have more plans for this paint color in our current house.
Hale Navy (Benjamin Moore)
This is hands down the most popular navy paint color. If you are looking for a true navy, this is it. And you might be wondering why I am suggesting such a dark color when I said that neutrals and whites are timeless paint colors. Navy is, and will always be, a timeless color and looks good with warm and cool colors. I have a few projects in mind using this color. It looks good on walls and makes a gorgeous cabinetry color.

Helpful tips when picking paint colors
Start with inspiration:
I talked a little bit about this in this post but I’ll touch on it again. Picking your paint color for your walls should be one of the later things you do when designing a room. Find a large focal piece (rug, art, window treatments) and look for colors in those pieces that catch your attention. Get on Pinterest and look at magazines. Get some ideas of what you like. It is your house.
Decide on the mood of the room:
Do you want your room to be light and bright or dark and moody? If you home doesn’t get a whole lot of natural light, stark white walls might look dingy. I would consider a paint with some color to it.
Grab your swatches and bring home samples
Bring home some swatches and ideally some sample paints if you feel extra ambitious. Test them in every room. Remember each room gets different natural light. See how they look in the morning and at night. If you want to see the undertone of color, look at the darkest color on the paint color strip. If you love a paint color but fear it can be too dark, ask them to cut it with 25% or 50% white.
You can buy all your paint at Home Depot
I am a huuuge fan on Behr’s paint. I usually use their Ultra line and I can’t say enough good things about it. We had professional painters come in to paint our 2 story entry way and even the professional painter said you can’t go wrong with Behr paint. If you want to save a little money on your paint, Home Depot will color match any color for you from either Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. I know some designers might cringe and tell you that Home Depot won’t be able to match the formula 100%. I haven’t had a problem yet.
Get free large swatches
If you want to see your paint swatches in a larger scale, I have been known to grab a bunch of the same color swatches and then taping them to a piece of paper. Those 2×2 swatches are for the birds. You can also order large free swatches from Benjamin Moore here
Keep a list of your home paint colors
It’s always a good idea to keep a list of the paint colors you have used in your home. I can’t tell you know much it has helped me. You can get access to my paint color tracker in my resource library. Sign up below and get the password right away.

My favorite painting supplies
Paint brushes: I love all of Wooster’s paint brushes but this one is hands down my favorite one to use. It makes cutting in so much easier.
Painter’s tape: I hate taping and I really try to avoid it but when I can’t I make sure I use a good tape
Drop Cloths: Yes, you need them and you need many. I have used trash bags and old shower liners before too.
Cleaning Cloths: These are amazing every day cloths for cleaning but work great for baseboards and walls before painting.
Multi Position Paint Brush tool: The best tool you will ever use if you have tall ceilings or just in general. I used something similar to this to paint my 15 foot ceilings in my family room and it was a life saver.
Paint Edger: This might get a bad rap but if you do it right, it has been a nice helper for me. Especially when trimming around windows and along baseboards.
Touch up cup: Nothing is worse than having to pull out the whole can of paint for a little touch up.
