IKEA office ideas (modern home office ideas)
Our home office recently got a little mini makeover. Mainly because my daughter wanted her desk that I swiped from her back. In our old house her bedroom was too small to have such a large desk in her room so I deemed it mine again for the past the few years. After all, it was my desk I had growing up.
Her current room though is larger and I recently gave her bedroom a makeover and I knew it was just a matter of time until she wanted her desk back.
And just a few weeks ago she gave me the “I want my desk back” look
But that gave me the perfect opportunity to get a new desk for my office….and I thought why stop there. I wanted to get a new light fixture too. It’s always the domino effect with me.
Let’s back up first. When we first moved into our new home, our office looked like this:
I did a whole post about it’s first makeover here and it sat like this for years
And now it looks like this
I only made a few changes recently but sometimes that is all it takes to make such a huge difference in your home. And it took three years to get my office to look like it does today. Room makeovers take time and money.
Update…the furniture in our house played a game of switcheroo. I now have a settee and pink chair in my office. I can’t say I hate it…

IKEA Fjalkinge
The first thing I wanted in my new office from the beginning was some sort of shelving…for decor and storage. I had so many ideas in my head and found so many ideas on Pinterest but it was this picture from Studio McGee that sealed the deal for me on the IKEA Fjalkinge shelves.
I like how you can customize these shelves to your liking. One day I WILL buy the actual drawers that comes separately with the shelf unit. One of these days, promise. That’s the real storage I need. For now, I have been throwing my office supplies and random junk in baskets. It works for now but I would like to have it more organized.
I highly recommend these shelves. If they are good enough for Studio McGee, they are good enough for me. (I’m a poet and didn’t even know it)
When it comes to decorating these shelves, I just throw whatever I want on them. Most of it is useless decor, yes, I know this. But to me it’s pretty and I work better in pretty spaces. These shelves also act as storage for my pretty things. I change things around in my house all.of.the.time so most things get stored in here until I move them somewhere else.
It’s a win/win for me.
You can see some of my tips for decorating bookshelves here. I’m not a professional so read that post with that in mind.
IKEA Sinnerlig
Before I get into how awesome this thing is, let me first start by saying that I installed this bad boy myself. Never in my life have I touched anything electrical. I watched my dad a few times and I had him sort of assist me with our dining room chandelier(link) but this bad boy was installed all by me, myself and I.
It didn’t take much for me to fall in love this this big ol glowing thing of rattan hanging from my ceiling but I loved it even more after I installed it all by myself.
The price is flipping insane and it’s huge! (If you watched ‘The Office’ then go ahead and say what I know you want to say)
Back to being mature…I had originally purchased another rattan pendant for in here but it was too small for my space. I knew deep down I just needed to take a trip to IKEA. I ain’t no dummy
This guy was meant to live in my office. Maybe you are sick of seeing this light fixture all over IG world but there is a reason. It’s just that good. I dare you to find something similar to this for the same price. I double dog dare you actually. I tried and I failed.
Ikea Lack Wall Shelf
There is a whole saga going on with my washer and dryer situation. I am not a fan of their current location but I lost the battle and here they stay. Long story short I needed something to hide the dryer vent.
This was my solution.
I leaned a few pics up against the shelf and voila, the dryer vent is hidden
These shelves are great and come in multiple sizes and colors and once again the price cannot be beat. I have a few plans to possibly you these shelves in another room…maybe we will see.
The decorations on this shelf changes daily. This month I am attempting a hodge podge of frames and artwork. Check out this post on where I like to find affordable art for your home
Ikea Ribba Frame
One of my favorite frames is the IKEA Ribba Frame. If there was an IKEA closer to me, I’d for sure have a ton of these frames. They come in all shapes and sizes. While I love these frames, they make great “leaner” frames. They are hard to hang with the way they are designed so keep that in mind.
My other favorite frame from IKEA that is newer is the Hovsta frame. I love the color of the wood on these frames
Dining Table As Desk
The biggest change in my most recent office makeover was purchasing a new desk. But I didn’t want the traditional rectangular desk. I wanted a round desk. But finding a round desk is next to impossible. I expanded my search to round dining tables. Sometimes I am a genius, you know.
I looked at 1,452,365 round dining tables and the one I landed on, while pretty, I cannot recommend. I had two of the same tables sent to me and both were damaged in shipping. I am currently in the process of finding another table but for now, the current damaged table is working just fine.
Let’s be honest, my kids will damage it anyways.
The DOCKSTA dining table from IKEA is a contender right now. I just haven’t pulled the trigger.
I’ll link a few of the dining tables I also considered below.
I like having a round desk in here. It fits my space better and gives me more space to work. The kids like coming in here to do crafts/homework as well and they also now have more room to goof off study.
I guess it’s safe to say that if it wasn’t for IKEA my office would be bare bone!
