IKEA Uppland Sofa (and how it differs from the IKEA Ektorp Sofa)

 

Well, the day has come. IKEA has (sort of) officially retired my beloved Ektorp Sofa and replaced it with the Uppland Sofa.

Rumor has it though that they are not completely removing the Ektorp sofa from their line up quite yet. As of right now, the Ektorp sofa is only available in the Lofallet Beige color and that’s it. And the Lofallet Beige is the only slipcover you can purchase for the Ektorp. The other slipcovers are gone.

I love my Ektorp sofa. I even did a whole post about it. (You can see my Ektorp sofa post here).

But here we are. It’s just a matter of time before it is completely gone and forgotten about.

So what’s a girl to do? That’s right, I took a special trip to IKEA to take a look at the Uppland Sofa….just for you…and for my mom since she was going anyways to purchase the Uppland sofa for her house.

If you are weird like me, you might have lost a few hours of sleep wondering why IKEA would discontinue one of their most popular sofas.

And I am kidding…I haven’t lost sleep over the Ektorp sofa being discontinued…I (sort of) promise.

But it does make me a tad bit sad. The IKEA Ektorp sofa was legendary.

I purchased our Ektorp many many years ago when I wanted to the Pottery Barn comfort sofa but knew that there was no way that I was going to spend that much money on a sofa.

Anyways, I got the juicy details for you….why, oh why, would they discontinue the infamous sofa??

You tall people have spoken and IKEA listened. The Uppland sofa is deeper and higher than the Ektorp sofa.

Yep, all of this to change up some dimensions. I guess people are wanting bigger couches these days.

(However, us short little Italians like the smaller couches if I do say so myself)

But there are other differences I noticed too while I was out shopping with my mom

1:) Dimensions~Uppland vs Ektorp

Like I just said, the Uppland is slightly higher, deeper and wider than the Ektorp sofa.

The Ektorp dimensions are Width: 85 7/8″, Depth: 34 5/8″, Height: 34 5/8″

The Uppland dimensions are Width: 88.25″, Depth: 36.25, Height: 36.25

I can’t say I feel like my Ektorp is small in scale but for those with larger spaces, the Uppland might be a good fit.

2:) Springs~Uppland Vs Ektorp

The Uppland seat cushions have springs in them while the Ektorp cushions are all foam.

I will have to say I have owned my Ektorp for at least 8 years now and the cushions are still holding up great. I am sure the Uppland cushions will hold up even better….and maybe be as, if not more, comfortable thanks to the springs.

4:) Slipcovers~Uppland vs Ektorp

This was the biggest difference I noticed and I can thank my mom for pointing this out. This is actually one point against the Uppland sofa.

Their slipcovers are only one sided

 

As opposed to the Ektorp slipcovers that are two sided.

I love being able to wash my cushion covers but sometimes you just want to flip them over to prolong having to wash them again.

Your days of flipping cushions over to hide dirt are over with the Uppland. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Overall the Uppland looks almost exactly like the Ektorp and still has that cozy sofa vibe people love so much.

What colors do the Uppland slipcovers come in?

Blekinge White~ This is their whitest slipcover which is obvious due to it’s name. Surprisingly, there wasn’t a sample of the white sofa in stores so I couldn’t get a picture.

Hallarp Beige~This is the closest beige to the Ektorp’s Lofallet Beige. This is the slipcover you get if you are afraid to go white in your home but want a light colored sofa

Totebo Light Beige~

This is a slightly darker beige than the Hallarp Beige and more of a gray/beige. It’s hard to tell from the lighting at the store so just trust me.

Hallarp Gray

This is a darker gray and reminds of the Ektorp’s Nordvall gray slipcover

Remmarn light gray

This slipcover is a lighter gray than the Hallarp Gray. It has some texture to it. Here’s an up close view

Virestad red/white

This slipcover is, well, different. I cannot tell how I feel about it. IKEA likes to throw in a crazy pattern in their slipcovers every now and then and this is the Uppland’s crazy slipcover.

 

Does the Uppland cover fit the Ektorp?

Well, it won’t fit exactly since the Uppland is bigger.  You can try but there will likely be extra fabric since the dimensions are different.

Is the Ektorp completely discontinued?

Like I said before, the Ektorp is not completely discontinued (yet). The gentleman at IKEA didn’t make it sound like it was going to be completely gone for good but you can only get the Ektorp in the Lofallet Beige color (and likely only online).

The stores no longer carry the Ektorp sofa. The Lofallet beige slipcover is still in stock and I think it’s a good idea to stock up on extra slipcovers just in case.

What are the dimensions of the Uppland Sofa?

I know I answered this before but I know many of you just scan blog posts. So let me tell you again

How to order the Uppland online

The Uppland is still slightly newer so getting it can be challenging (depending on when you are reading this).

If you find that the Uppland sofa in your desired color isn’t available for shipping, you can purchase the sofa frame only and then purchase the slipcover separately.

If you have a IKEA store near by you might need to get the slipcovers in the store.

You can also purchase the couch in another slipcover that is in stock and buy a different colored slipcover separately. Sometimes it’s nice to  have two different sets of slipcovers.

They are so inexpensive so it’s worth it.

Shipping isn’t too expensive considering the fact that you are getting a couch delivered to your home.

They might offer in home delivery too for an extra charge. I think it all depends on your location.

Is the Uppland Comfortable?

Well, the jury is still out on this one. According to my mom, my Ektorp is more comfortable than the Uppland. Like I said though, our Ektorp is many years old and is likely broken in more than my mom’s couch.

I personally do not notice too much of a difference.

How easy is it to assemble the Uppland?

Much like the Ektorp, assembly is pretty easy and straight forward. You attach the legs, open up the couch and attach the arms.

This is IKEA we are talking about….you know everything needs to be assembled. But this couch is one of the easier things to assemble at IKEA.
