Designer Faves at IKEA

You guys should know by now that I love IKEA. I try to make frequent stops to see what’s new as often as I can.

But I’m not the only one that LOVES IKEA. Don’t let anyone fool you.

Designers love IKEA too.

Interior designers often use IKEA as a secret weapon—especially for basics they can customize, layer, or repurpose.

Here are 10 things designers regularly buy at IKEA:

(And if you see something you love, IKEA now offers shipping…which is amazing)

1. BILLY Bookcases

I had to start with the Billy Bookcases. This is what IKEA is known for

Not really…but everyone is familiar with the Billy bookcases

A classic for a reason. Designers hack these into built-ins by adding trim, paint, and custom doors.

And now, IKEA made them even better. The newer versions of the Billy bookcases are gorgeous.

2. PAX Wardrobe System

Highly customizable storage. Pros love using it for closets, mudrooms, and even faux built-ins in bedrooms.

3. BESTÅ Cabinets

Sleek media units or floating sideboards. Designers often swap out and/or add hardware for a high-end look.

4. IVAR System

Solid pine shelving that’s easy to paint or stain. Great for pantries, craft rooms, or minimalist spaces.

5. RODALM frames

Affordable frames that make gallery walls look polished without blowing the budget.

6. LINNMON / Table Tops

Designers pair these with stylish legs to create custom desks or dining tables on a budget.

7. Window Treatments

IKEA has the best curtains. I love them because they are so affordable, designers love them because they come in longer lengths and can be hung with a pinch pleat (see more about pinch pleating your curtains here).

8. Sofas (especially the HYLTARP and UPPLAND)

Need a sofa that looks just like it came from Pottery Barn-IKEA is your place.

IKEA sofas are so affordable, come in multiple colors, and you can always find custom slip covers…just a few reasons why designers love them.

9. LOHALS Rug

A neutral jute rug designers use alone or layer under patterned rugs for warmth and texture.

10. Lighting (Especially SINNERLIG)

Natural fiber pendants and simple fixtures that feel organic and modern. I have a few lights from IKEA and they are hands down some of my favorites.

I had the SINNERLIG in my office. It is so affordable and so large. It definitely makes a statement

I have the ARSTID floor lamp and love it. It also comes as a table lamp.

Bonus Find: The LOMMARP collection.

This is my absolute favorite piece of furniture at IKEA. It’s gorgeous and looks straight out of a designer magazine. Nothing at all is needed to update this piece.

It is perfect as is.

Designer Tips to Make IKEA Look Luxe

✨ Swap hardware — brass pulls and knobs instantly upgrade cabinets and dressers.
✨ Add trim/molding — turning a simple IKEA unit into a “built-in” makes it feel custom.
✨ Layer textures — combining natural fiber rugs, luxe throws, and curated accessories brings depth.
✨ Paint strategically — a fresh coat in a designer color transforms basic pieces.
