Console Table Styling
(Step by step guide to how I decorate my console table)
(This post contains affiliate links. You can see my full disclosure here)
I decorate and redecorate my console table in my entryway every two weeks it feels like.
I change it out for every season and sometimes a few times each season
It’s just what I do.
A while ago I did a post on how to decorate your console table step by step.
I still follow those steps to decorate console tables but I decided to change it up a bit this go around.
There are really no rules in my interior design world. I do not like following rules…just ask my parents.
Some people like and need symmetry in their design, some people can care less about symmetry (me)
Some people like to have just a few things on their consoles, some people like to have all the things on their console tables (also me).
It’s your home and it’s also your console table so decorate it however you love.
But I’ll show you how I like to decorate my console tables. For me, it is all about the layers. I layer in different textures and heights.
You’ll see….
Console Table Styling~decorating console table in entryway
I have had our console table for years, actually for almost 20 years to be exact. Our console table was one of the first pieces of furniture we purchased when we first got married.
We got it at World Market and that is when my love for World Market began. As you can imagine this table is no longer available so I linked a few others below.

Layer 1: Tall Vase or Lamp
I like to either have a tall vase or lamp on one side of the console table.
Layer 2: Books or boxes (or bowls)
I then like to layer in some books, boxes or bowls right next to the tall vase or lamp.
You can find books anywhere and you can use any kind of books you want. I sometimes even use a stack of magazines if I need too.
If the top book isn’t too fancy looking, I’ll layer a cute tray on top of the books or magazine stack as well.
Bone boxes are a great option too to layer instead of books.
I always try to have a bowl on my entry way console table for keys or wallets.
Ask me if anyone actually uses the bowl for their keys or their wallets….because no one ever does. But it’s cute and I pretend like it has a purpose.
My bowl is from TJ Maxx but this one is similar
Layer 3: Artwork
I always try to have some sort of artwork either leaning on the wall or on an small easel on my console table
Layer 4: More vases for symmetry
This is where I changed things up a bit. I normally wouldn’t have this many vases on my console table but I was just feeling it this time.
I made sure these other vases were a bit smaller than the large vase on the other side so the sides weren’t competing with each other.
Make sense? Probably not
Technically we can stop here and before step 5. The table is decorated and done…
But is it, really?!?!
Layer 5: Ottoman
Remember I like layers.
So I started layering under the console table with a small ottoman.
The ottoman fits perfectly if I must say so myself.
How To Style A Console Table Behind A Couch
I also have a console table behind my chairs in my front living room. We used to have a couch there.
I am currently giving this room a mini makeover but I decided to keep the console table there even though the couch is gone.
Sometimes the space behind your couch can feel empty and it’s nice to have a place to add some decor.
You can see I (sort of) used the same formula. A tall vase with greenery and then a stack of books on one side.
The other side I have a lamp and a decorative bowl.
I opted to not put any art on this console table since I have wall art right above the table as a gallery wall.
I’m hoping to have a blog post about this room makeover shortly so stay tuned. I’m sure most of you are sitting on the edge of your seats waiting for that blog post.
(Naturally everything in this picture is out of stock too or I’d link what I can)
Console Table Styling In Dining Room
I had to go way back into my photo albums on my blog to find this picture of my old dining room.
Sometimes the old pictures are traumatizing but I still share them….as hard as that can be for me.
I once had a console table in our dining room and I used the bottom shelf for dishes but still tried to use my same formula for the top shelf.
