11 Tips To Create A Beautiful Back Patio.
Transform your outdoor space with my best tips for creating a stunning back patio.
I am a firm believer in using every square inch of your house. Why not?
There is not one room in our home that doesn’t get used. We even use our formal living room, the room that is always deemed useless by many.
Once the weather starts warming up, we have no excuse to use as much as our outdoor space as we can.
We made some big renovations to our backyard last year that I still need to blog about.
I had so much fun decorating and making our outdoor spaces cozy and inviting this year.
Maybe too much fun if you ask my husband.
It really does not take much to create a beautiful backyard. I decorate my outdoor spaces as I would the inside of my home, maybe with a few exceptions.

1. Create a Cozy Lounge Area:
My motto has always been, make it cozy and they will come.
I cannot say enough good things about our outdoor sofa and chairs from Walmart. I promise to do a blog post just on them alone, but for now, just know they are well worth their inexpensive price tag.
They have held up great outside and are so comfortable.
I underestimated how much we would use this space out here. It’s a great spot to have when we have guests over or the kids have friends over. This couch and chairs are the MVP of our backyard.

2. Hang String Lights or Lanterns:
There is just something about ambient lighting, am I right?.
I love our outdoor solar lights we have under our gazebo. They go on at night and sometimes are still on in the morning.
I also love these lanterns from Walmart with these outdoor battery operated candles in them.
3. Create an Outdoor Dining Space
Our deck still needs some work done to it but we love sitting out here and eating dinner.
An umbrella is a must and I cannot say enough good things about the cute outdoor serveware from Walmart.
(Our outdoor table is out of stock but the chairs are still available and are really great)

4. Outdoor Rugs and Accents:
Just because you are outdoors does not mean you need to skimp on the rugs and pillows. This is how you make any space cozy
Any pillow can become an outdoor pillow with this waterproof spray and these inserts.
I have this rug out on my screened in porch.
And this rug under my gazebo.
I love them both.

4. Add a Fire Pit:
Incorporate a fire pit as a focal point for your patio. It does not need to be fancy either.
We just plopped a few adirondack chairs and a fire pit right in our backyard.
We had originally thought to create a paver patio back here but quickly realized this was the easiest and most affordable option…and it is working out just fine.
5. Create a Vertical Garden:
This is on my bucket list this year. We had a huge garden in our backyard but the deer would just have a feast every night.
I lost the battle so this year I am attempting a vertical garden using planters for now.
We’ll see if I end up graduating to something more.
You can also utilize your vertical space by installing a vertical garden or trellis with climbing plants to add greenery and privacy to your patio area.
6. Outdoor Kitchen or BBQ:
This is also on my outdoor bucket list one day. I would love an outdoor kitchen.
For now, we just have our grill and smoker out back on our deck, which is perfectly fine for the time being.
I would love some countertops and storage one day.
If you are like me and cannot put a full on outdoor kitchen in your backyard, I think an outdoor bar set is a great option for storage and extra seating.
7. Water Feature:
When we first moved into our current house, we had a great fountain right off the back of our house. I loved sitting on our backporch listening to the sound of the fountain.
The fountain eventually took a turn for the worse and we no longer have it.
So I did what every other determined person does and created a smaller version for by our pool.
It’s not as loud or as big as our fist fountain but it makes me happy regardless.
8. Add a Pergola or Gazebo:
I love our pergola, more than I thought I would. It provides shade and defines our lounge area by our pool.
We purchased our gazebo at Lowes and had our contractor install it for us…because putting that together is not something I will ever want to do.
But I sure do love how it looks.
9. Make it Cozy:
Whatever you do to your outdoor patio, cozy it up. Even if it’s just a hammock or an outdoor sofa with a few pillows.
There is no law that your outdoors cannot be cozy.
Naps have been taken on that couch.
10. Outdoor Entertainment:
Piggy backing on number 9…make it cozy and entertaining.
We have a TV out on our sunroom and we are always out there watching TV when we are not napping.
Cornhole and other outdoor games are also great idea for entertainment.
11. Let there be light
Proper lighting can extend the use of your patio into the evening. LED lights, lanterns, or even solar-powered path lights can highlight your landscaping and provide safety.
I love our outdoor solar lamps we have out here.
They create just the right amount of lighting at night and surprisingly have not blown away. Between our string lights and our table lamps, our back yard is well lit.
Now, go decorate your back yard and take a nap the second you can!
