How To Decorate Mantel With A TV above it
I’ll show you 6 easy ways to decorate your mantel with a TV above it.
(PS…I stole the above picture from my mom…thanks, mom!)
Can you guess what I think the hardest thing to decorate in my home is??
You should obviously know I am about to say my mantel since that is what this blog post is all about.
I have rearranged my mantel decor 452,562 times since we moved into this new house.
I currently do not have a TV above our mantel in this living room but we did in our old house.
Back then I did not stress too much about my mantel decor and my style back then is much different than it is now.
I’m trying to embrace the less is more mindset in my home decorating these days…sort of.
I feel as though there are certain areas in my home I like to scale back and certain areas I like to “over decorate”.
I have said this before and I will say it again, it is your home so you can decide how you want to decorate it. I wrote a blog post all about home decor trends and I sort of cringed the whole time I wrote that post.
If you love a sort of design style then decorate according to your likes.
You can over decorate your mantel if that tickles your fancy or you can just have only a TV above your mantel.
The mockups I am about to show you are just for fun. You can add or take away as you like.
I try to not enforce any rules in decorating either. I am not a rule follower. I am not matchy matchy and I do not need symmetry in my life.. I like matchy matchy but I also like to live on the wild side.
I get asked about decorating a mantel with a TV quite a bit so I hope this post helps.

Also, before we get started, TVs have come along way over the years. A frame TV can double as a piece of art on your mantel instead of a big black box.
If you do not own a frame TV, there are other ways to stream art onto a smart TV. You can look for art on YouTube or you can even stream a picture on your phone through Chromecast.
So with that being said let’s start with some matchy matchy designs. This is for those that need symmetry in their life.
And this will be the easiest decorating you will ever do.

Sometimes all you need are a few black candle sticks. Notice the frame TV? It’s just nice to be able to add some color to your mantel. But it is not necessary
Another simple and easy way is to use sconces.
You do not have to hard wire the sconces either. I have sconces on my mantel and I just added a battery operated light bulb to my sconces. I actually have sconces all over my house using this technique.

If you want to keep things symmetrical but want a bit more decor on your mantel you can add a dough bowl under your TV (as long as it doesn’t prevent your husband from watching TV, of course)

Mantel Decorating (when you are a rebel)
Now let’s say you want to live on the wild side. Let’s look at some designs that are not symmetrical. This is when you need to be a little bit more conscious when decorating your mantel.
I know I said I do not follow too many rules when decorating but I do try to make sure I have different elements on either side of the TV if I am purposely not trying to match.
For example, I wouldn’t do a vase with flowers on one side of the TV and a vase with different flowers on the other side of the TV. It’ll just look like I was confused.
Instead I’d do something like this
Flowers on one side and something completely different on the other side.

Here’s another example using just a plant (real or fake) and black candlesticks again.
Another example of greenery on one side and books on the other.

You don’t have to use greenery or a plant on your mantel either. Just make sure the decor on each side of the TV differs. I try to have vary the height on each side too. It’s not a must but it helps add interest to a mantel.
