DIY Vintage Christmas Ornaments

December 1, 2023

DIY Vintage Christmas Ornaments

The other day I had a wild hair to make some ornaments and started making DIY marbled ornaments.

Once I was done with that project I just kept on going.

I was in a mood to DIY for some reason.

I made quite the mess but it was fun to just do some mindless crafting

I love the look of vintage ornaments and was mindlessly scrolling Pinterest when I got a few ideas in my head.

In full disclaimer, I am not taking credit for any of these designs. You will see all kinds of ways to make your own vintage ornaments out on the internet.

This is just what I did and I am sure most of what I did came from other blog posts I read.

It was really easy to get the look of vintage though…you might need some patience since each ornament took a few different coats of paint but it was well worth it.

~Ornaments. I just used clear ornaments but you can technically use old ornaments you might have laying around since you are just painting over them

~Craft paint in a few different colors (I’ll share below what I used)

~Metallic craft paint (again, I’ll share what I used below)

~ Spray paint (optional). I sprayed the tops of my ornaments but this step is optional

~Pretty ribbon. I used the same trim from my marbled vases but a pretty ribbon can take any ornament up a notch

~Paint brushes and sponges

~Baking Powder

How To Make DIY Vintage Christmas Ornaments

Again, this is easy but will require a few steps.

Let me give you the run down on paint colors first

I did the same technique for each ornament (and if you ever helped your mom sponge paint a bathroom like I did in the 90s then this craft project will bring back tons of memories.)

First, remove the tops of your ornaments. If you want to spray paint them or rub and buff them, go for it. I spray painted mine gold.

I then painted the ornament with the darker paint color out of the trio that I was using.

I did add baking powder to my paint. I can’t say it made a huge difference but it did give my ornament some texture

Once that dried I used a sponge and sponge painted the lighter color onto the ornament

I let that dry and then sponge painted the metallic paint color to my ornament

I just kept repeating those last two steps until I got the look I was going for.

This is a great project if you are a messy DIYer like I am. Towards the end I was making a huge mess but the ornaments turned out just how I wanted them.

I was concerned about the blue ornaments

But they turned out just fine. So if you are wondering what the heck you are getting yourself into with this project, don’t fret…it’ll be just fine
