How to make drop cloth curtains using canvas drop cloths from your local hardware store.

Direct your eyes to my window treatments on my sliding doors. They might be my favorite curtains to date. If you didn’t know any better you would think they are linen drapes and those usually cost a pretty penny. My drapes however cost me about $10 and are normally found in the paint section at any hardware store. Let me introduce you to this wonderful product called drop cloths. The amazing thing about drop cloths is that all four sides are already sewn so this is a NO SEW option for you.

There are a ton of tutorials on Pinterest about drop cloth curtains, feel free to do some researching. Most tutorials will tell you the same thing. If you read my previous post you know that drop cloth curtains require lots of bleach and patience. Not all drop cloths are created equal. It’s been a few years since I did a drop cloth project. I liked the ones at Lowe’s back in the day but things might have changed over the years. As long as they do not have a plastic backing you should be fine. I’ve always used the 6X9 cloths for my curtains but they have longer sizes if you have extra tall ceilings.
Once you take them out of the packaging you might think I’ve lost my marbles and I promise you the end result looks nothing like what you see at first. Get yourself to the dollar store and buy all of their bleach. Soak them in bleach for a few nights (I used a whole bleach container every time I soaked them…I think I burned my nose hair off doing this project) and wash them multiple times. If you do not have a top load washer and cannot soak, you can soak them in your tub or even in a plastic bin. If that’s too much of a pain you might just have to wash them a few more times in hot water and lots of bleach. They get soft and almost linen looking.
These are heavy drapes too so I would highly suggest a thicker rod to hang them from and all you need are curtain clips to hang them. If your windows are not high (mine were) you can also fold them over like this to hang them if you hate sewing as much as I do and do not want fabric puddling on the floor (a little puddle never hurt anyone though).
And you are done…bleach, wash and hang!
Drop Cloths are amazing for so many other projects. They are really inexpensive and easy to work with (once you bleach the daylights out of them). Some of these ideas are already on my list and some are new to me. If you have a creative itch I really think you should tackle one of these projects below!
