10 Of The Best Living Room Design Trends and Decor Ideas

I wasn’t going to write this post mainly because I am not a fan of “trends”

I try not to focus on trends when I am decorating my home.  I decorate with what I love..regardless if it is trending or not.

But with that being said, you guys have always loved my home decor trends posts I write.

I decided to give you guys more of what you love.

This time we are focusing on living room trends and decor ideas. While some of these are considered “trends”, I truly believe alot of these are just really good design ideas to incorporate into your living room, trending or not.

Everyone has a living room and it is likely one of the most used rooms in your home.

So here we go…

10 Of The Best Living Room Design Trends and Decor Ideas

1)  Natural Elements

Natural elements continue to be trending, with natural materials like bamboo, reclaimed wood, and stone being the most popular. Textiles like linen, organic cotton, and wool will also be favored.

This also includes natural elements like plants. Ideally you’d have real plants in your home but for those of us born with a black thumb…faux is just as fine.

Indoor plants, green walls, and nature-inspired elements bring the outdoors in

2) Muted Color Palettes

Muted color palettes are gaining traction again.

Softer shades such as dusty blues, muted greens, and warm grays provide a calming and cozy space.

These softer colors work well with all design styles from modern to traditional

You can also play with layering different muted tones to create a cohesive look. Mixing similar shades brings complexity to the design, making it feel more intentional.

3) Curved Furniture

Curved furniture isn’t anything new.

This “trend” is all about incorporating furniture pieces that have curved or rounded edges, rather than sharp, straight lines.

Curved furniture can add a softness and elegance to a room, and can create a more welcoming and inviting atmosphere.

Some popular examples of curved furniture include curved sofas, rounded armchairs, and circular coffee tables.

4) Vintage Inspired Decor

If you haven’t noticed more vintage inspired decor popping up lately, you are about to

Vintage decor is here to stay for a while.

Accessorizing with vintage decor enhances your living space’s personality. Look for items like vintage vases, art prints, or even decorative pillows. These accents add depth to your design.

Thrift stores and flea markets are excellent places to find these unique pieces. If you are like me, you can find some great stuff in your mom’s basement too.

Mixing vintage with modern elements creates a balanced look. Try pairing a vintage lamp with a sleek, modern sofa.

5) Shelving

Having bookshelves (or open shelving) in your living room blends both function and aesthetics.

I know bookshelves can be a challenge to decorate…believe me, I know

Bookshelves serve as more than just storage though—they become focal points, adding warmth, character, and personality to the space.

Whether filled with books, decorative objects, or family mementos, they create a cozy and curated atmosphere.

Open shelving designs, paired with natural wood or metal finishes, work well with modern and vintage styles.

6) Wall Treatments

I remember the days of helping my mom sponge paint our walls. I think it is a matter of time before we might be pulling out the sponges again.

For now though, I expect to see wall treatments such as Venetian plaster, slatted wood panels, and other textured paint effects

Bold, large-scale murals or wall art that makes a statement will also be very popular

I also think we will be seeing less shiplap on our walls and seeing more beadboard and box molding on our living room walls

7) Cozy spaces

I do not consider this a trend. I think every family room should be cozy and inviting.

One day I will write a blog post about this but for now it’s all about layering your textiles.

Throw blankets, pillows, and rugs all create a cozy layered look.

8) Maximalist Art and Statement Pieces

Maximalism is trending right now and I am here for it. I believe this goes hand and hand with #7 above.

I am a firm believer that a home is not cozy if it’s barely decorated. If you want your home to feel cozy you just simply have to add more layers to it.

Some (my husband) might call it junk, but I like to call it decor. This goes for art in your home too.

Gallery walls are still here and more popular now than before.  And when it comes to gallery walls, more is more.

This look can make your home feel cozy and let your personality shine through in your home.

9) Smart Lighting

I am going to age myself here but this “trend” is just over my head. But I know it’s popular, I just haven’t wrapped my head around it yet.

With smart lighting, you can control the ambiance and functionality of your space through your smartphone or voice commands.

With smart bulbs, you can adjust brightness and color temperature to suit your mood or activity. For instance, you might prefer bright, cool tones while working and warm, soft lighting for relaxation.

For now, my lighting is still dumb and I am ok with that. I’ll report back if I decide to upgrade my lighting…but I probably won’t

10) Artisanal and Handmade Décor

Artisanal crafts and handmade objects will be popular again this year. Textured ceramics, handwoven rugs and blankets will add a personal touch to living rooms.

Textures will play a key role in décor—woven wall hangings, stone or clay vases, and knitted throws will give spaces depth and visual interest
