The best places to find affordable pillow covers for your home decor and where to find cheap inserts!
Now, I know I wrote a post similar to this one a few years ago but alot has changed in the pillow world and most of the pillows I referenced are no longer available. I also learned a few new tricks so I thought it would be best to make a whole new post.
Pillows are one of my favorite things to decorate with and if you have been hanging out with me for any length of time, you should know this. Pillows are a perfect way to add color and texture to your space. And a quick and easy way to annoy your husband. My husband does not share my love for pillows. Sometimes I wonder how we are still married…kidding!!
You do not have to sell any body parts to get pretty pillows on your couch either. A great combo is a nice pillow cover with a great down insert. That’s when the magic happens. I have three little kids and one large dog. I would be out of my mind to spend alot of money on pillow covers. Because guess where the pillows end up?? On my floor.
I’ll show you some of my favorite places I shop for my pillow covers and where I like to find good inserts. So keep reading…

Make Your Own Pillow Covers
Before we get into where I like to buy pillow covers, let’s talk real quick about making your own…the no sew way. I listed 6 different ways you can make your own pillow covers with some unexpected items a few months ago. One of my favorite things to use when making your own pillow covers is napkins. I love how easy it is to switch out your pillows each season with some cute napkins. You can read all about it the post I linked above. It really is so easy to make your own pillow covers. Do not fear a bottle of fabric glue
Where To Find Cheap Pillow Covers
And when I say “cheap” I don’t mean cheap in quality. I mean cheap, as in, your husband won’t get as annoyed with you when he has to throw another pillow out of his way to sit on the couch.
Walmart Throw Pillows
Let’s just get this one out of the way. Sometimes I feel like Walmart gets a bad rap and they shouldn’t. I find some cute home decor at Walmart. And pillows are no exception. The Better Homes and Garden line at Walmart usually gets two thumbs up from me. I have this pillow and this pillow.
The cream waffle weave pillow comes with a polyfill insert BUT I replaced it with one of my large down inserts and what a world of difference it made. The pillow went from sad to happy real quick. (We’ll talk more about this later). This pillow is also 24″ x 24″ which is a great size for a pillow and/or as a sham on your bed. This pillow is a rock star for the price.
This lumbar pillow checks off all of my pillow needs. Great fabric-check; fringe detail-check; and it comes with a down insert-double check check! And the price is triple check. This pillow is a winner all around. And if your color is out of stock, keep checking back because usually they come back in stock.
Walmart has a ton of other cute pillows too. I have better luck looking online and then shipping it to the store.
Amazon Throw Pillows
Oh, Amazon, how I love thee. The amount of home decor I can find on Amazon should be concerning. I even did a few posts about my love for Amazon here and here. But we can talk pillows just for now. You can easily go down a rabbit hole looking for pillows on Amazon…and I have. I think I am still in the rabbit hole, actually
There are some pillow covers that cost less than 25 cents and will take 3 weeks to get delivered since they are likely coming from China. And there is nothing wrong with those but I am going to pass those up for now. Because for now, I can only speak for the pillow covers I have actually purchased (and a few similar ones that I want to purchase).
My favorite pillows on Amazon are any of the pillows from Woven Nook. You can also purchase directly from Woven Nook but if you have Amazon prime you can use your free shipping. Their pillows are so affordable and so so so good.
(Pillow)
I also purchased these pillows from Woven Nook but unfortunately had to return them. They were very pretty and the quality was great but they looked more tan in my space than off white and I just couldn’t get them to jive. I was so bummed. I can’t get over the quality for the price. Highly recommend!
I also purchased these tassel pillows from Amazon recently and they are made so well and are very cute. I love the detail on them too
These pillows are in transit to my house right now. I’ll try to remember to update this post once I get them. But after reading all the positive reviews, I can’t imagine that I won’t love them.
Let’s talk about some pillows that have been saved in my Amazon shopping cart for a few months because I am indecisive as a mother.
- These pillows have great reviews and the price is so good. I have had these saved in my cart for so long and will likely be purchasing some soon. I think they will be great pillows for the spring and summer months.
- These pillows are very similar to the ones above but have a little detail on them. I like these solid pillows as anchor pillows and the fabric looks so good!
- Anything from the Stone and Beam line on Amazon looks good to me. These pillows are a little bit more on the expensive side but not too bad. I haven’t purchased any of these pillows yet so make sure to read the reviews.
- Rivet is another line exclusive to Amazon and their pillows are similar in price to Stone and Beam but, again, not crazy expensive.
Hobby lobby Throw Pillows
Every single time I go into Hobby Lobby I check out their pillows. Here are some tricks with Hobby Lobby. No two Hobby Lobbys are exactly alike. I find some pillows at one store and others at another.
They have two different sections of pillows. One section is just the pillow covers that are packaged up. These are usually by the curtains and are fairly inexpensive. But keep in mind these pillows are usually only 18X18. Also never buy your pillows unless they are having their half off sale. They alternate their sales every week.
The pillows that I really love at Hobby Lobby are the ones that are full fledge pillows with inserts and they are usually scattered around the store. I walk up and down every aisle looking for these pillows. Most of these pillows have good quality down inserts too. Some of their pillows have the poly fill inserts but the ones with the down inserts are some of my favorite pillows. These navy velvet pillows are hands down my favorite pillows I own.
Sometimes I buy them just for the inserts.
Here’s another one of their pillows but with a polyfill insert. I loved this one for my daughter’s room. I was going to change out the insert for a down insert but it’s working just fine in here as is.
Again, never buy your pillows full price. Wait for them to go on sale.
H&M Throw Pillows
I’ve mentioned H&M as one of my favorite pillow sources way back when and they still are and they are so affordable. I purchased this one years ago and it is still one of my favorite pillows ever
One thing to note with H&M is that when you see a pillow you like, grab it quick! They seem to go out of stock quickly and rarely ever come back in stock. You can see their whole collection here.
Woven Nook Throw Pillows
This is a repeat from above (see Amazon) but when I can’t find a pillow from Woven Nook on Amazon (because, hello-free prime shipping), I go straight to their website. I can’t say enough good things about their pillows. The quality and designs are amazing and the prices are even better. I have signed up for their newsletter just so I can get notified when they have new pillows being released.
Home Goods/TJ Maxx Throw Pillows
This is a no brainer but sometimes it bears repeating. I do notice that the good pillows do not last a hot minute in Home Goods. I have had my fair share of times that I left a pillow and then went back to get it the next day and it was gone. So get it before it’s gone. You can also find pillows online at TJ Maxx on their website
I already had to come back and edit this post not even 1 hour after I posted it. I just bought these pillows from TJ Maxx. I’ll update once I get them. But that price, and they are down inserts and 26″ x 26″. Say whaaaaa!
IKEA Throw Pillows
It took me awhile to jump on the IKEA bandwagon and now I can kick myself. They have some great pillows that are very affordable (none of which I own-gasp!) I know, I need to go get myself some pillows. You can buy some online or just find IKEA and spend hours walking around their maze. And I know one day I will break down and buy this pillow.
Pottery Barn/West Elm Throw Pillows
Now, I know what you are thinking. Pottery Barn does not scream budget friendly but when you wait for one of their premier days you might just luck out. I think I bought this pink pillow cover for around $10 last year (and my daughter swiped it for her room). You never know when the premier days are but they have them often.
Always Look For Sales on Pillow Covers
I am constantly on the hunt for a good deal. At least once a month, I get on Serena and Lily, Pottery Barn, Etsy etc and look for sales. The black pillow in the picture above I found on clearance on Serena and Lily’s website. The smaller blue and white thick striped pillow was on sale at Mae Woven … a cute online shop that I like to stalk.
I do not do this just for pillows either, I am always looking for a good deal (and I try to share them with you when I can so sign up for my newsletter…hint hint)
Where To Find Affordable Pillow Inserts
Nothing kills a good pillow cover like a crappy insert. You can even turn a crappy pillow cover into a great pillow with a good insert. You cannot go wrong with a down insert. Whatever you can do to avoid the poly fill inserts is advisable. Their is nothing wrong with a polyfill insert but it won’t do your pillow any favors.
Let’s use my Walmart pillow as an example. Here’s a picture of the same exact pillow cover with two different inserts. One is a down insert and one is the polyfill insert that the pillow came with.
Now, tell me inserts do not matter??
Always remember that if you see a pillow cover you love but doesn’t look “high” end; as long as you can remove that cover you can do great things with that pillow cover. Don’t judge a pillow by it’s cover. Wait, nevermind, that doesn’t make sense.
My favorite place to get inserts is Tuesday Mornings (if you have one near you). It’s been a while since I have been there but when I go I always look for inserts.
My next favorite place to find good inserts is the clearance section at TJ Maxx/Home Goods. I love their down inserts so if I see a pillow on sale in their clearance section I will buy it just for the insert.
IKEA has great down inserts and once again, I don’t own any. What is wrong with me??
Amazon has a great selection of down inserts
These inserts have great reviews and are priced very well. They are 26×26 which might seem huge but that brings me to my final point. You will always want to get inserts that are at least one to two sizes larger than your pillow covers so your pillows look full.
