15 Clever Ways To Decorate Your Small Living Room
I have been blogging for 8 years and there is a good chance I might have already written a post just like this already. If not, I wrote one very similar to it.
I almost sure of it.
But regardless, let’s just pretend I haven’t written a post like this.
I have always loved reading blogs. That is why I started my own blog.
I try to write blog posts that anyone can relate to. Not all of us have giant homes with giant living rooms to decorate.
My living room is not huge. The vaulted ceiling makes it appear bigger as well as a few tactics I used when decorating this room.
Designing a small living room to look and feel spacious involves strategic choices in furniture, colors, and layout. Here are some ideas to maximize space and create a comfortable, airy environment:
1. Use Light Colors and Neutrals
Light Walls: Opt for light and neutral tones like whites, creams, soft grays, and light pastels to reflect natural light and make the space feel larger.
Monochromatic Palette: Stick to a similar color palette for the walls, floors, and furniture to create a seamless, open look.
2. Opt for Multi-Functional Furniture
Storage Ottomans: Use ottomans that double as storage and extra seating.
Convertible Sofas: Invest in a sofa that can turn into a bed for guests or a sectional that fits neatly in the corner.
Nesting Tables: These save space when not in use and can be pulled out as needed.
3. Embrace Minimalism
Declutter: Keep the space as open as possible by limiting the number of decor items and unnecessary furniture.
Floating Shelves: Instead of bulky cabinets, use floating shelves to store books or display small decor items.
4. Smart Use of Mirrors
Large Mirror: A well-placed large mirror on a wall can create the illusion of depth, making the room feel more spacious.
Mirrored Furniture: Consider adding pieces with reflective surfaces like glass or mirrored coffee tables to enhance the sense of openness.
5. Choose Slim, Low-Profile Furniture
Leggy Furniture: Furniture with visible legs, such as mid-century modern styles, create a lighter, airier feel compared to boxy, solid-bottom pieces.
Low-Height Furniture: Lower sofas and tables allow more visual space above them, giving the illusion of higher ceilings.
6. Maximize Vertical Space
Tall Bookshelves: Use vertical storage solutions to draw the eye upwards and make the room feel taller.
Tall Curtains: Hang curtains close to the ceiling, even if the windows aren’t very tall, to add height to the room.
7. Use Transparent or Glass Furniture
Glass Coffee Table: A clear glass or acrylic coffee table won’t obstruct views, making the room appear more open.
Lucite Chairs: These invisible-style chairs can offer seating without crowding the space visually.
8. Create Visual Flow
Area Rugs: Choose a large area rug that fits the majority of the furniture on it. This helps define the space without cutting it off.
Cohesive Decor: Keep decor and furniture styles similar to avoid visual clutter.
9. Maximize Natural Light
Minimal Window Treatments: Use light, sheer curtains or leave windows uncovered to let in as much natural light as possible.
Reflective Surfaces: Incorporate metallic accents or light-colored wood to bounce light around the room.
10. Strategic Furniture Placement
Pull Furniture Away from Walls: Floating furniture arrangements (rather than pushed against the wall) create a cozy seating area and give the illusion of more space.
Angle Furniture: Arranging a sofa or chair at an angle rather than straight on can break up the boxiness of a small room.
11. Add Wall-Mounted Lighting
Wall Sconces: Instead of floor or table lamps, which can take up precious surface space, use wall-mounted sconces. They provide light without cluttering surfaces.
LED Strip Lighting: Install LED strips along shelves or under furniture for subtle ambient lighting. This can create a floating effect that feels light and modern.
12. Use a Statement Piece
Single Focal Point: Rather than overcrowding the room with multiple pieces, select one statement piece, like a bold armchair or a striking piece of artwork. This draws attention and keeps the rest of the decor minimal.
Oversized Art or Mirror: A large piece of art or a big mirror can add personality and create depth without physically taking up space.
13. Play with Patterns and Textures Sparingly
Accent Wall: If you want to introduce patterns or bold colors, do so with an accent wall rather than filling the entire room. This adds personality without overwhelming the space.
Textured Fabrics: Use subtle textures, like linen or velvet, to add dimension without cluttering the room with too many visual elements.
14. Consider a Wall-Mounted Console Table
Floating Console or Desk: A floating console table provides space for essentials without using floor space, leaving more room for moving around.
Under-TV Storage: Mounting the TV on the wall and adding a small wall-mounted console underneath can reduce clutter and free up floor space.
15. Add Indoor Plants for Vertical Greenery
Hanging Planters: Instead of taking up surface space, opt for hanging planters or wall-mounted plant holders to add greenery.
Tall, Slim Plants: If you have a bit of floor space, go for a single tall, slim plant (like a snake plant) that can add life to the room without crowding it.
